The Penalty Box

It’s always sunny in Philadelphia. I’ve never been to Philly but I have seen the tv show and I love cheesesteaks so that basically makes me a historian. Today’s history lesson is all about one of my favorite broad street bullies. ‘The Hammer’ also known as Dave Schultz, who was drafted back in 1969 52nd overall.

Dave Schultz was a major part of the Broad Street Bullies and helped bring Philadelphia back to back Stanley Cups. The leader of the “Mad Squad” he was so much more than an enforcer. One of the best fighters to ever play the game he often used muscle rather than finesse. He played for several teams and was in the NHL for over a decade. Not only is he a Stanley Cup champion but also pop music star after releasing a hit single, “The Penalty Box”.

In the 1974-1975 season he was the leagues leader in penalty minutes. 472 is the NHL record for penalty minutes in a single season and might not ever be broken. The time he spent in the box earned him lots of radio play in the Summer of ’75.

Fast forward to 1994, Dave Schultz walks out for World Championship Wrestling’s Slamboree. The Nasty Boys vs Kevin Sullivan and Cactus Jack featuring Dave Schultz as a guest referee. Things get crazy at about 11:30 and if you don’t believe me just watch the video below.

You know you’re a big deal when you make it on The Simpsons. Dave Schultz made an appearance voicing himself in episode 11 of season 34. Also, be on the lookout for his second book coming out in the fall of this year.
