With only 15 days until the opening of the NHL regular season, The Penguins head to Buffalo for their first preseason game of the year. THEY’RE BACK… kind of. The NHL preseason is a massive tease, and although tonight’s lineups are missing the big names, it’s a chance to see some of the younger guys who will hopefully be the future of the franchise, and contribute to another successful season. After a summer in which they didn’t have to play hockey until June and party the rest of the summer away, the Penguins are finally back.
The Penguins offseason, their longest in the past 3 years was one that saw the return of Matt Cullen, the addition of Derek Grant and Jack Johnson (not the banana pancakes guy), and the departure of Connor Sheary. This offseason was filled with watching Ovechkin dunk his big Russian melon in The Stanley Cup as it’s filled with Bud Light, and swim in fountains in DC (which is disgusting), and as annoying as it is seeing all of these nerds “rocking the red”, I can tell you with 100% certainty it was in the Penguins best interest to lose. I know what you’re thinking, “Wow, what a spin zone”, but hear me out, back to back cups takes its toll, and this longer offseason leads to more time for rehabilitating injuries, like Evgeni Malkin’s knee.
There are some interesting storylines coming into the 2018-2019 season, with it being reported that Casey DeSmith is in line to backup Matt Murray, over Tristan Jarry, who started 23 games last season. Maybe Daniel Sprong will crack the lineup full time, who knows. Who is Juuso Riikola and is he the heir to a cough drop empire???
The beginning of the NHL preseason also brings back one of my favorite twitter accounts, which should also be one of your favorite twitter accounts if you are a Penguins fan, @PensFacebook71 who has their finger on the pulse of the spiciest facebook takes from the Penguins fans. Goodbye offseason, and welcome to NHL Preseason.
