Our Prodigal Son Isn’t Going Anywhere!

Friday morning the Washington Capitals announced that they have signed Stanley Cup Champion forward Tom Wilson to a 7 year, $45.5 million dollar extension worth an annual salary value of $6.5 million. This extension will be put in place for the 24-25 season after his current contract expires.

Wilson was drafted by Washington in the 1st round (16th overall) in the 2012 Draft. Among his draft he ranks 3rd in games played, 6th in goals and 7th in points.

The 29 year old forward is now the only player on the team with a contract that goes past the 2028 season.

Wilson who has been a force on the ice for the Caps over the years and one of the key factors in why we won the Cup in 2018 missed most of last season rehabbing and recovering from his ACL injury that occurred during the 2022 playoffs.

Wilson in his limited time in the 22-23 season netted 13 goals and 9 assists in 33 games.

Wilson despite missing 49 games, he still was tied for 5th on the team in goals and power play goals. The 6’4″ 220 lb. forward has accumulated 295 points with 128 goals and 167 assists in 680 career games in Washington. I can’t not mention that when he is at his best he is one of the most feared guys on the ice in the NHL from physicality to goal scoring skill Wilson is the total package and makes sense why other teams hate him because we all know every team in the NHL wants a Tom Wilson like player on their squad.

GMBM was reach to comment on the contract and he stated “Throughout his career, Tom has improved every facet of his game through his drive and competitiveness,” “We feel his work ethic and leadership qualities will be a tremendous asset to our organization for years to come.”

It’s safe to say based on this information that Wilson will be the Capital’s next Captain once the Great Eight decides to hang up his skates after beating the goals record.
