Northeastern over UConn

Your Northeastern Huskies traveled to the University of Connecticut to face the (other) Huskies for the first time since the 2024 Hockey East Championship game. This time around, there was no missed boarding call (yeah I’m still not over that), and NU got the W 1-0 at Toscana Family Ice Center.

This was a goalie duel from the opening draw to the final horn. Tia Chan (1.67GAA .940%) was in net for UConn, and at the other end of the sheet stood Lisa Jönsson (1.34GAA .942%) manning the pipes for Northeastern. The pace was up tempo from the start and both squads had chances in the opening frame but neither team could solve the ‘tendies. NU had the edge statically at the end of the first with a 11-6 edge in SOG and a 10-5 advantage at the dot.

In the middle frame the physicality ramped up as the frustration mounted. NU had the edge in zone time and puck possession but none of it translated to the scoresheet. The teams headed to the 2nd intermission still knotted at gooses.

In the 3rd Lily Shannon called game. The junior from Andover had the best chances throughout the game and it finally paid off as she potted a rebound from the slot. Tuva Kandell wired a shot from the top of the zone and Chan kicked the rebound back into traffic. The bouncing puck eluded Jaden Bogden but Shannon was right there driving down Main Street to tuck this in the open cage. Keep the change and be safe driving home.

UConn pulled Chan to try to get back into this one but Jönsson kept the (other) Huskies at bay and earned her first shutout at the NCAA level. Oh and it was against a top-10 team? Not a big deal. I will say that I think Taze Thompson owes Shannon a burrito for being offsides and wiping Shannon’s ENG off the board.

The Huskies welcome in the (other) Huskies to Historic Matthews Arena tomorrow afternoon for the back half of the home and home series. I expect more of the same from these two squads as this is shaping up as a nice preview of the Hockey East playoffs. And since I want to encourage the video team to post more defensive plays on the timeline, here’s a beauty of a play in front of the NU net.
