As it is every year (and seemingly much more so the last few seasons) the NHL Trade Deadline brought us some diaper-filling trades, right up to the last minute at 2:59pm ET today.
Dallas proved that the more things change, the more things stay the same by paying a forward multiple millions more per year than he’s worth (anyone who wants to tell me Mikko Raantanen is worth the same salary as McDavid or Mackinnon please save me the anger from your irrational stupidity).
The Bruins decided to trade their captain who’d been with the team for 16 seasons for essentially 3 buckets of pucks in 2027.
And Ottawa decided to twist the knife even further into their captain by trading his best friend in the entire world.

And the Blues did what I think is probably for the best, especially with Colton Parayko out the rest of the regular season after suffering a knee injury during OT of Wednesday nights game: absolutely fucking nothing.
In my opinion, a lot of teams got worse. Boston, Carolina (LOL), Ottawa, etc all sold off top level players while also managing to royally piss their fan bases. The Blues are not in a sell situation currently.
But also some teams got better. Colorado and Dallas loaded the fuck up, Edmonton added a couple of solid pieces, the Panthers got substantially better today, etc. But the Blues, unlike the four aforementioned teams, are not 1-2 players away from a Stanley Cup. We are likely 3-4 Robert Thomas level players away from a Cup
So instead of selling core pieces like Schenn, Parayko, any of our elite up and coming prospects such as Dvorsky or Snuggerud, or adding some slightly above average player Doug Armstrong did exactly what the Blues should do. Stay put.
It may seem boring as shit, but we ain’t winning a cup this year and probably not next year.
BUT. If…
-Dvorsky comes up and plays to the level we think he can, which is prime Tarasenko or better
-Jimmy Snuggerud finishes up in Minnesota finally and starts scoring goals like this in a Blue Note:
Jimmy Snuggerud capped last night's scoring with his 21st goal of the season to match his final goal total from both 2022-23 and 2023-24.
The goal was the #Gophers' NCAA-leading 135th of 2024-25. Minnesota finished with 135 goals in 2023-24.pic.twitter.com/kkZdYugVK0

-We shed some of our older than my Grandpa’s WW2 relics defensemen making $6mil + AAV (besides Parayko, Broberg, and Fowler I don’t care if we sold the rest of our defense)
-Finally bring this stallion home:

THEN, ladies and gents, you have a potential cup contending team that gets us filling up Enterprise Center in May again.
But none of those moves would have, should have, or could have happened today.
If this slightly above average roster somehow squeaks into the playoffs and wins a few games, sure I will spend an irrational amount on playoff tickets and $20 Bud Lates.
But I am totally 100% okay with us sitting with our thumb up our ass this trade deadline, especially since it was partnered with the Bruins waiving the white flag on their contending era. Which will make any true St. Louisan smile:)
