The took on the Winnipeg Jets on Tuesday night and the Jets were seeking a playoff clinch with a win or make it to OT.
The Jets got on the board first off the deflection by Josh Morrissey off the clapper from Mark Scheifele, 1-0 Jets.
After it looked like the Caps were going to be down by one going into the intermission Andrew Mangiapane had other plans in the McNugget Minute. On the 3v2 rush the money man Chychrun found Mangiapane for the one timer to beat the Jet’s goalie, 1-1 ballgame.
This was Andrew’s 14th goal of the season, as well as Chychrun’s 26th apple on the season and is one assist shy of matching his career high in apples.
The Capitals had one their better second periods we’ve seen in a minute but nothing came of it. Unfortunately the Jets came away with the lone goal and the lead with less than 20 seconds left in the period. Mason Appleton had an absolute snipe piece to give the Jets the lead, 2-1.
Into the 3rd the only goal we saw was from guess who and from guess where. Protas found Ovi in his office for not a one timer this time but a quick gather than a wrister that ties the game at 2.
Ovechkin is now only 6 away (889) from passing Gretzky for the record.
We head to overtime, where the Caps won the very important first faceoff and controlled the puck for a while getting a couple nice chances and even a pipe ringer from Protas, but the only time the Jets touched the puck they made it count due to a bad line change by the Caps where the speedy Nikolaj Ehlers found open space and found the top shelf past Logan Thompson for the OT winner.
This was a very good and to be honest very underrated Jets team that the Caps lost to tonight. Connor Hellebuyck was lights out and just the better goalie tonight.
The boys played solid tonight but the Jets were just a step better tonight, can’t be upset with the overall play aside from losing potential powerplays due to retaliating with the opposing team (it happens).
The Capitals are back in action Thursday as they head to Minnesota.
