Alex Ovechkin Is Your New NHL Goal Scoring Leader!

Sunday afternoon on Long Island in what was basically a Capital’s home game with how much red was being worn in the stands, finally goal scoring immortality has been reached! “Simply sensational!”

The record that was said to never be touched has been beaten by our Russian Captain Alexander Mikhailovich Ovechkin with goal 895.

Yes this was the record breaker but it was also was his 6th goal in his last five games. I’d say he’s earned a day off coming up to rest for the playoffs.

Also the Islander’s goalie Sorokin had yet to give up a goal to Ovi till today, now he has been added to the Ovi graveyard list making him the 183rd different goalie he has scored on.

On the powerplay in the 2nd period the chase for greatest has ended and how fitting that the two assisting parties consisted of Dylan Strome who took over the duties of Nicklas Backstrom and long teammate of Ovi’s and future Capital’s Captain Tom Wilson etched themselves in the history books as well on the play.

Also in typical Ovi fashion he celebrated just as he did with his first ever goal, straight pure joy and acting like a kid, you just love to see it!

Say what you want about the league but the presentation they did of Ovi during the game was chills worthy. Gretzky being so humble, respectful and acknowledging greatest as well as making some jokes get this guy at open mic night. Just overall incredible and can’t believe I was able to witness this ride.

The craziest stat of all is that Ovechkin broke the record in 1,487 games the EXACT number of games Gretzky played in his career to reach his 894 goal mark, WILD!

I became a die hard fan the day Ovechkin was drafted by the Caps and my cousin’s in Virginia got me join the fanbase because of it. My one cousin passed away somewhat recently and his was even more of a Cap’s fan than me whether it was signed memorabilia or watching open practices at the MedStar facility. He was as big of a fan as it gets. Whenever Ovi scored he would tweet 8BOOM8 which was also his license plate. I know he was looking down and smiling that “his guy” finally did it. So thank you Ovi for making me a fan and than you for so many hockey memories and it is going to suck seeing you not in a Cap’s sweater one day, but for now lets cherish the moment and rest up for a Stanley Cup run!
