Holiday Greeting Morning Skaters,
I recently suffered the death of a sibling. I am not writing about this for condolence. But I will gladly accept them. I just wanted to take a moment and to use the forum that Ked and Hal have given me, to say that hockey matters to all of us, on the ice and off.
With the news of my sister passing I reached out to The Morning Skate boys to let them know that I was going on radio silence for a bit. In order to grieve and take care of arrangements.
I will preface this by saying that I have never met these two in person and only know them as Isle5Cleanup writing about the Islanders and youth hockey. I am grateful for the forum and the opportunity, but mostly for their friendship.
It has often been said that hockey is filled with good people and it is. Sports and the fans and players, matter to us on multiple levels. We follow our teams and hockey with the passion of parishioners in the church of ice. As players we are allowed a few brief moments to engage in the game of hockey. We all know that you have to be focused on the game, every second, even in the beer leagues. That focus allows us to escape any issues and just concentrate on the game for a few minutes a week. Or several times a week if you don’t have kids.
That release is priceless. Of all of the sports that I have participated in during my 47 years, hockey has the biggest since of team. You work “ferdaboys” and always have the other persons back. In that since I have to say thank you to the great guys that run this site, podcast and blog.
These guys are the guys that have my back and I will be forever grateful to them for that. When the chips were down, these guys reached back to check and make sure that I was OK and offered whatever was needed to help me out. Those are the offers that long-time friends make. Meaningful and heartfelt.
In these holiday times, I hope that you have friends, virtual or real, like Ked and Hal. If not, find them and surround yourself with people like them. If you play this great game, they are already all around you. They are at the stadium, in the locker room, at the bar, online, literally everywhere.
Have a great holiday break, enjoy your hockey, listen to the latest pod – It’s a good one!
