I really wanted to wait on this one until it was confirmed, but at this point I figure it would just be a waste of time. Given that jersey leaks these days usually aren’t wrong and the fact that the league has confirmed they’re doing reverse retro jerseys, I get the sense what we’ve seen is what we’re getting. Plus, our boy Fink is pumped about his Stars’ new blackout jerseys so we might as well keep it up with the jersey talk.
For those of you who have no idea what I’m talking about, these are the jerseys that were leaked on Twitter just over a week ago.
When I first saw these jerseys, I hated them. In my search to find them again to write this blog, it made me realize….yeah, I still hate them. These jerseys are absolute garbage. Look, I get why these were made, I just really don’t like it. The league is having every team take one of their older jerseys and swap the colors, hence the “reverse retro” tag line. What I don’t get is why they thought the jerseys from the Lindros era were the way to go. Maybe the league is mandating the jerseys are from the 90s, hence the reverse retro jerseys that the Penguins have coming, but I haven’t seen anything to confirm that. Therefore, I am led to believe the Flyers chose this jersey to be the one they use, and I am not ok with that.
What would I have done? Honestly, I’d take the original jerseys from the first season (basically what they wear now), and make black the primary color with orange and white accents. There. That’s it. That’s all they had to do. Instead, we get something that looks like a Chinese knockoff jersey you can get on ebay for $15.
I guess I’m not a fan of the NHL’s reverse retro idea. Obviously, the league wants something that every team is doing so they can market it as a whole rather than just a few teams. It just annoys me that the league likely gave every team a list of weird guidelines they were supposed to follow, other than telling them to make a cool jersey people want to spend $200 on. Maybe we’ll get some cool jerseys out of it, but I could see the whole campaign being a bust.
It also just really irritates me that the Flyers have had so many opportunities at third jerseys over the years, and always seem to drop the ball. Are their current black thirds ok? Sure, but they’re not great. Their 2012 Winter Classic jerseys were nice, but the Flyers are meant to have an orange home, white away, and black alternate. At least, that’s how it is in my mind. The Flyers used to have such amazing black jerseys as their primary home jersey. For some reason, they haven’t gone back to them, and I truly don’t get it. Below is a photo from ESPN from the 2008-09 season showcasing exactly what I’m talking about.
Is it part nostalgia? Probably. But I can’t take you seriously as a Flyers fan if you tell me you don’t love these jerseys. They’re simply perfect and I really can’t say much else. Maybe one day they’ll come back, and you can bet I’ll be first in line to drop however much it’ll cost to get one.
