With the recent release of the reverse retro jerseys by the NHL, one jersey stood out above the rest. Big. Bad. Blasty.
Yes. This Dallas Stars homer is enamored with the Calgary Flames flaming horse head jersey. The why? Well that’s something I hold close to the chest. (No. I am not awkwardly in love with horses and or fire, so move on from that.) Something else that Blasty did for my memory bank was remind me of the premium edition of the NHL gaming series. NHL ‘03.
With Jerome Iginla donning the cover, Blasty is in full display. Like coming out of hypnosis, the mere sight of that beautiful fire ridden horse head catapulted me back to the days spent in the mean streets of Garland, TX. Spending countless hours on a futon with my neck fully blasted back. Eyes on the screen. The commentary from Jim Hughson and Don Taylor made you feel like you were in the game. Just like EA Sports tells you so.
The Gamebreaker feature that was introduced in this game would allow you to become Pavel Datsyuk, with your friends being the victims of your filthy mittens, heavy right hooks, or a Kronwall type body check. This game had it all.
Not to mention that soundtrack. Oh, that banger filled soundtrack. There’s no feeling like popping on the original X-Box with the controller in hand that was built like a mini van and hearing, “EA Sports, it’s in the game!” only to be followed by “Sweetness” from Jimmy Eat World. Peak early 2000’s nostalgia everyone. You know it, you love it. Close your eyes and bask in the glory of NHL ‘03.
For this fortunate enough to still have their old systems and this game, take a moment and blast a few one timers for your old pal Fink. Let us know what your favorite edition of NHL is too!
