Breaking News Today: Henrik Lundqvist just announced that he will not be playing for our beloved Washington Capitals this upcoming season due to a heart condition.
Lundqvist made his unfortunate news known via Twitter, Tuesday afternoon.
The King signed a one-year deal with the Caps in October after spending 15 year in NYC with the New York Rangers, where he became the sixth winningest goalie in NHL history and appearing in one Stanley Cup Final.
Lundqvist was set to split starts with the Caps young Russian stud Samsonov this upcoming season. With the sudden absence of The King between the pipes the Caps will lean towards another young goalie who was the backup in the bubble Vitek Vanecek where he held his own when his number was called, and veteran backup Pheonix Copley will likely take the role of the veteran presence in the locker-room when it comes to the goalies.
Obviously, this stinks for not only Caps fans, but also any fans of The King. With the change of scenery and joining a contender fans were awaiting a possible spark in Hank’s career after suffering the last couple seasons in the city that never sleeps.
I am also curious if Lundqvist has considered still joining the Caps but in more of a mentor/coaching role till he finds out the true severity of his heart condition.
Wishing the best for Hank, and hoping he gets some good news in the coming months that allows him one more chance at a Cup run!
