I am Not Excited for the NHL

The NHLPA and NHL came to an agreement over the weekend to realign divisions and move forward with the ’20-’21 NHL season. It will be a fast and furious lead up to puck drop on January 13, 2021. Training camps for non-playoff teams will begin as soon as December 30, 2020. Hockey is officially back but, I am not excited about it.

I am not excited about the sounds of the puck hitting the ice. The feverish pace of the game. The feeling of normalcy it will bring to once again see the likes of Crosby, Ovechkin, McDavid, back on the ice once again solidifying why the NHL is the greatest hockey league in the world. I am not excited about the Dallas Stars returning to Dallas to play inside their home at the American Airlines Center.

I am not excited to see all the Reverse Retro uniforms hit the ice for the first time. I am not excited to see the Stars blackout uniforms glow for the first time. I am not excited to see Anton Khudobin’s childlike exuberance on full display as he comes off the playoff performance of a lifetime. I am not excited to see the veteran foundation of the Stars blend in seamlessly with the future of the franchise. I am not excited to think that at some point this season I could be back in the stands with NHL hockey being played. (That’s to be determined personally.)

I am not excited to see the realigned divisions ignite temporary rivalries nor am I excited to see them further others. I am not excited to see all Canadian teams battle it out for who really is the King of the North. I am not at all excited to see the Stars in a top heavy Central division. I am not excited to see the Carolina Hurricanes’ Twitter go back to business as usual.

I am not excited.

This is a rib. You’ve been had my friends. I am ecstatic! Are you kidding me? The NHL is back and the world is a better place for it! The days and nights of not knowing if the most beautiful sport on ice was coming back are over. This feels like when Chevy Chase made the final ditch attempt to plug in all his Christmas lights. Crack open a cold one, grab your favorite snack and toss on your jersey because it is officially go time!

C’mon. Did you really think I wasn’t excited? Classic bait and switch.
