The Washington Capitals have signed veteran legend Zdeno Chara to a one-year deal worth $795,000!
The Caps came out of nowhere to sign Big Z, a 6 time NHL All-Star and former Stanley Cup champion defensemen and el capitan of the Boston Bruins. Chara is currently the oldest player in the NHL at 43 years young, and also the tallest player in NHL history standing at 6 feet 9 inches…..nice.
Chara took to twitter and Instagram with a lengthy thank you to his Boston faithful.
I personally didn’t see this move coming, but after some thought after Lundqvist being out of the question for this season it did open up some room financially to bring Big Z to the D.C. area.
Chara is loved throughout the NHL for his hard-work, dedication, and being a stellar teammate. Not to mention being gritty as hell by playing through multiple jaw fractures during the 2019 playoff run.
Being a huge Yankee fan, the way Chara plays and is perceived by his peers and fans, is very similar to Derek Jeter, another legendary captain. I can’t imagine how Boston fans feel having to see their beloved captain wearing another sweater besides a Bruins one.
Oh and did I already mention he is tough as nails!
I think this move was a perfect surprise in my opinion. Being that the Caps needed help on defense and having a veteran like Chara on the other side of the bench across from Ovi will only bring positive results.
Excited to have you Big Z, now lets get you another Cup!
