No we aren’t here just yet, but you know it’s coming. I just wanted to be the first to state that this is where I draw the line. The New York Rangers goal song is to never be touched and if it were, there is one song that is completely unacceptable. 1-877 KARS 4 KIDS….K – A – R – S KARS 4 KIDS…..DONATE YOUR CAR TODAY!!!! Every New Yorker knows what I’m talking about. The jingle that makes us cringe. The jingle that makes us hate kids. The jingle that makes us feel good about not donating to children in need!
***CAUTION: DO NOT WATCH IF YOU DON’T WANT YOUR LIFE RUINED***
I do want to use this blog to touch on the new ads the NHL is embracing to help cover the money they’ve lost over the last year. The cost of COVID is going to be felt for a very long time. Not just within the NHL, but the entire country. For what it’s worth, I think fans need to embrace the ads on the helmets and sponsored divisions. The NHL isn’t the NFL or the NBA. It needs the revenue from as many places as possible if they want to keep expanding and growing the game. The more revenue this league generates, the more the game grows whether you like it or not. I’m not sure if the NHL jerseys and socks will look like that of Europe over the next couple years, but the truth is, that day is coming. Pandoras Box is now open and once the NHL gets a hold of the new revenue, they will never let it go. As for the sponsored divisions? If you’re upset that the East Division is now the Mass Mutual Division, you probably have a lot of other problems in your life that you should address first. Even if it is permanent, who cares? It’s not like the NHL is replacing the Patrick, Smythe, Norris, and Adams Division.
If you’re angry at me for telling you to “embrace it,” I completely understand. The hockey sweater is supposed to be pure. It is meant to be untouched by hands of commercialism. But the effects of COVID on the NHL has been detrimental and I am sure Gary will do his best to delay the inevitable, but the truth is, the league needs the money now and will need the money in the future. You don’t love the game because there isn’t an ad on your teams jersey or socks. You love the game because of what hockey means. The passion of the players, the friends you’ve made playing the game yourself, the comradery of rooting for your team, and the emotional roller coaster that every season, game, period, and shift brings. Advertisements won’t change the game on the ice, but it will help the league expand and grow and for that reason, I’m in.
My top 3 ads I hope my team has…..Chipotle, Dunkin Donuts, and Chic-Fil-A. The Rangers will skate on Dunkin.
