In typical Ovi fashion late Tuesday night against the New York Islanders right after netting his 1,300th career point (not a big deal). He wasn’t done there soon after Ovi reach another milestone in the same game scoring his 718th career goal.
Ovi is now the 35th player in NHL history to reach the 1,300 point mark. He is only one of two active players to reach 1,300 points (Joe Thornton).
Alex also is only one of two players (Brett Hull 705 goals) to reach the mark with at least 700 goals scored.
Oh and surprise surprise if you didn’t watch the game I bet you can guess where Ovi scored his milestone goal from. Yep you guessed it at the top of the left circle on a Caps powerplay. Ovi’s goal was assisted from newcomer Justin Schultz and funny enough blew his rocket of a shot past former Cap’s goalie Semyon Varlamov.
The Caps ended up finishing off with the win against the Isles with other goals from Nick Backstrom and the red hot TJ Oshie. Also we got great goaltending from Samsonov who recorded 21 saves on 22 shots.
Ovi’s goal moved the Gr8 past Bruin legend Phil Espositio for sixth all-time on the NHL goals list.
This was Alex’s 12th goal of the season after being on somewhat of a slump, and as John Buccigross says “goals sometimes they come in bunches.”
Ovi also recieved a nice congratulations video over the Cap’s jumbotron after his goal from Esposito.
Next on the milestone list comes Marcel Dionne former Kings great, who sits at fifth all-time with 731 goals.
Prediction from my goal 700 blog:Â Ovi Passes Gretzky in the 2025-26 season at the age of 40 the week of January 5th!
With last years Covid shortened season and this years shortened season the odds are more against Ovi to catch the great one but if there is anyone that can beat those odds its Alex Ovechkin, so buckle up because he will be top 3 sooner than later.
Also the Caps are on a 6 game winning streak so it just goes to show when Ovi starts heating up so do the guys around him, which is how any team should act when their captain is playing well.
The Caps are back in action tonight against the New York Rangers after they just beat the piss out of the Flyers so lets hope the boys can give the Rags a reality check tonight.
