What is it about the Original 6? The Detroit Red Wings, New York Rangers, Boston Bruins, Montreal Canadiens, Toronto Maple Leafs and the Chicago Blackhawks.
The New York Rangers and Detroit Red Wings met Thursday night in NYC. Outside of the first part of the first period where the Red Wings came out hungry and buzzin’, the Rangers pushed play for most of the game. Panarin, Zibanejad and Shesterkin are absolutely legitimate but the Wings were able to do enough, stick around and had the lead until the Rangers tied it on the powerplay in the third period. Detroit played a tough game and ended up with a well earned 2 points. (Bruins losing tonight helps)
The game took more than 3 periods to settle it, overtime, and then the shootout, thanks much in part to Thomas Greiss being solid in net. The ice looked like it was terrible all night, for both teams (obviously), choppy, puck bouncing all over, looked slow but what a game!
To close out the shootout, Thomas Greiss laid out for a diving poke check on Ryan Strome. Pius Suter scores his first shootout goal and Greiss closed the door on Filip Chytil to give Detroit the extra point.
Fights, hits, the crowd chatting “Detroit Sucks”, solid goaltending, stars scoring goals (Larkin, Zibanejad), and two of the best looking uniforms in hockey. (I said it) Ending in the shootout was just gravy. Love to see it. The brutal stretch against teams that are playoff locks continues… Colorado, Toronto, Carolina, Tampa.. points are at a premium.
Please excuse me, being a lifelong Red Wings fan, I am very biased but let’s squee a bit more with the Original Six teams.

(totally acknowledging names were left off here.. so don’t shoot.)
