Tough Night at the Old Barn

Your Northeastern Huskies welcomed in the Boston University Terriers to Historic Matthews Arena for a rare (non-Beanpot) Tuesday night tilt. It took 60 minutes plus, but the Terriers prevailed 3-2 in overtime in front of a mostly topless Doghouse.

The Huskies continued to roll with 5 D and 2 extra forwards in front of Lisa Jönsson in the NU net. At the other end of the sheet it was Callie Shanahan looking for some Beanpot redemption. It was an excellent pace to open up with a lot of transition and a lot of stickwork behind the play. I mean what else would you expect from these two squads?

The sides took turns with zone entry, turnovers and back out the other way for the majority of the opening frame. BU didn’t get a shot on net until 8min played whereas NU didn’t land their first on net until past midway point.

Kaileigh Quigg put the Terriers on the board when she cashed in on a Lindsay Bochna rebound while camped on Jönsson’s doorstep. A turnover in the neutral zone sent the Terriers in 2:1 and just like that the Huskies were chasing.

That score held until the first intermission as neither side could get sustained time in the other’s offensive zone. Neutral ice was the place to be for the remainder of this one as that’s where all the cool kids were hanging out.

In the middle frame the NU lines went into the blender but the results were the same. The refs were letting all the ticks-tacky stuff go… until they didn’t. First Morgan Jackson was called for when the BU player dropped their stick slashing and then while on the PK, Skylar Irving played the puck in a BU defender’s skates on the forecheck and she was whistled off. All of a sudden it’s a 5:3 power play for over a minute?? The Huskies were up to the challenge…. almost. With seconds left on the kill, BU doubled up the score.

The Huskies were overloaded on the defensive RW and the puck popped to Clara Yuhn in the slot and she beat Jönsson over the blocker. Ruh-Roh. Down a pair to a very hungry BU team.

The Huskies entered the 3rd down 2-0 and outshot 25-10. And don’t even get me started on their face-off percentage! The Terriers were keeping the Huskies on the outside and giving them very little net front presence during 5 on 5 play. Time was winding down, would this be it for our heroes? Is this where the hearts and minds of the Doghouse was lost? Fear not Dear Reader, these Dawgs wouldn’t roll over and show their bellies just yet.

Jules Constantinople galloped out of her own defensive zone with bad intentions and pace, moving the puck to Taze Thompson in the neutral zone and headed straight to Shanahan’s blue paint. Thompson drove wide on the LW and put the puck to Constantinople at the top of the crease, her bid was denied, but the puck popped to Ella Blackmore cruising the slot. The Honey Badger tucked the rebound over Shanahan’s glove to put the Huskies on the board.

Then with under 5 mins in regulation, Allie Lalonde entered the chat. Mia Langlois moved the puck to Tuva Kandell at the left point and she put the shot on net, far pad: perfect placement. The puck rebounded to Lalonde in the slot and she’s not missing from there. Tie game.

The score held until overtime and during the 3 on 3 play, the Huskies did their best beer league impression as they bundled each other multiple times. In the end, it was Alex Law who called game. Law broke down the LW against some tired Husky defenders and beat Jönsson over the blocker far side.

Some observations from around the rink:

  • Mia Langlois put her mark on this game with limited minutes. Ms. No-Nickname was involved on every shift and stood out with her opportunities.
  • Lily Yovetich was active on an early PK with multiple stick checks and she was making her presence felt all night with her physicality.
  • Holly Abela doing her normal Holly Abela things on the PK going 1:3 and freezing the puck in the BU end.
  • Kristina Allard and Tory Mariano had their skating legs going tonight. The 2 of them were all over the ice.
  • Jules Constantinople with a great “accidental” body check as the horn sounded for the first period.
  • Mattie Robitzer with a big glove save on the bench early in the 2nd saved Eric some chiclets.
  • A little birdie told me that the referee unit from Saturday’s game vs. UConn were suspended. If true glad to see people being held accountable. If not true, maybe try it?

The Huskies head up to Maine for a Friday night tilt before enjoying a Saturday off.
