The Caps weren’t done after signing the King. Their next move comes to help the Caps backend with the acquisition of right handed defensemen Justin Schultz from our rival Pittsburg Penguins. Schultz signed a two-year, $8 million contract.
The 6’2″ 193lb 30 year old defensemen recorded 12 points over 46 games with the Pens last season. Schultz was a key cog in the Pens on the powerplay by recording the second most powerplay assists among d-men.
Schultz played five seasons in Shittsburg, Schultz has accumulated 113 points (22 goals, 91 apples) over his time in Pennsylvania.
Throughout his NHL career with Edmonton, and Pittsburg, Schultz has 214 points (40 goals, 164 apples).
The two-time Stanley Cup champion with the Pens knows what it takes to get it done when it matters most with recording 29 points (6 goals, 23 assists) in 56 playoff games.
Schultz has also represented Team Canada in the 2013 World Championship, which is a huge accomplishment given the star power Team Canada always brings.
This signing is huge in my opinion, because if you look at the Caps bubble performance their biggest issue was on defense, and with Michal Kempny getting Achilles surgery and expected to be out 6-8 months the Caps have even more holes to fill on the back end. So getting a guy that has Cup experience is huge especially after getting rid of that traffic cone Gudas.
I would love the Caps to get another D guy just for some depth. Guess we will have to just wait and see. #ALLCAPS
