I’m going to try doing a brief synopsis of Rangers games the night or day after the game. I started tweeting out period by period thoughts too so if you want to check it out, follow me at @morningskateked
What a stinker of a game. We were all anxiously waiting for the start of the regular season and there’s a good chance the Rangers still are. It’s been a while since the last time I saw a Rangers team have zero structure, purpose, or preparation for a game. I know its game 1, I know there’s a lot of new faces but its simple- look at how the Islanders played that game. They won 85% of 50/50 puck battles, were only caught out of position a few times and defended their defensive zone very well. This isn’t new. I know, I hate the Islanders as much as the next Rangers fan but you cannot deny that they are one of the best coached teams in the entire league. Quinns Rangers had no answers at all for the Isles and got throttled the first night of the regular season.
I thought Lafrenière quietly played a good game. He can keep up with play, control the pace, and seemed to make the right choices with the puck. He didn’t score a hat trick, sure, but in his first game I was very happy with what he had to offer.
Gauthier played the best game of anyone wearing blue. He was hard on the puck, created turnovers and foot races, and drove the net. It seemed like every time he was out there, the Rangers had the puck. And that was not often. I’m telling you, this kid is going to be a player just watch and see.
Did Ryan Strome play?
Jack Johnson was as advertised, just another Marc Staal with a different name. Rough first game as a Ranger and its not looking to promising.
Miller played a steady game. There were a few times where he looked overwhelmed but he is a silky skater and made decent decisions with the puck. Didn’t blow me away but didn’t look entirely out of place.
I hope Rooney is okay because he didn’t play that bad. He got pucks deep, took the body and created foot races— can’t say that for many of the Rangers.
Trouba played a tougher game tonight then he did most last season. Noogies for eberle in the net, going at Barzal (which led to an odd man rush goal) and was very physical in the corners. When Trouba came here I thought he was going to be a pain to play against- he took a step in that direction tonight.
Lindgren is bleeding again.
Sometimes when you don’t have it you just have to tell yourself that it’s just game one and we have a long way to go.
