Wednesday night with a 5-3 loss to those Philly dirtbags was a tough one but a understandable one being how lackadaisical the offense and defense looked for the majority of the game.
It seems of late the Caps are becoming a 3rd period team where they are firing on all cylinders because at least over the past month our 1st periods have been ugly and relying solely on our goalie to keep us in the game till we get out of the 1st period., especially against less superior teams.
In comparison the Flyers had 23 scoring chances during the first two periods, whereas the Caps only had 15 scoring chances. I hate being that guy but we have to get more pucks on net.
Garnet Hathaway got the Capitals on the board with a nice last second finish from a great pass from Jensen but only tied the game for about 20 seconds before the Flyers took the lead back.
After no score change in the 2nd and some great goaltending by Kuemper, he was doing his best to keep the boys in the game with saves like the one below.
Kuemper gave up two bad goals in the 3rd one on a 2 on 2 break with a wrist shot from the top right circle that should have been a easy save.
The Flyers 4th goal was on a 2 on 1 shorthanded opportunity from Philly where Kuemps was left out to dry and was beaten five hole, but still a shot he should save.
MJ90 brought the Caps within two from a snipe beating the Philly goalie to make it 4-2 Flyers. This was Marcus’s 11th goal of the season and is tied with Sheary for second most on the team.
Then Oshie brought the Caps within one from a filthy backhanded roof shot to make it 4-3 Philly, again showing late life in the 3rd for Washington.
Nicklas Backstrom got his first point of the season and his first since being injured on Oshie’s goal and a reminder that Nicky is the franchises all-time leader for assists at 748.
Overall the Capital’s powerplay just has to be better especially when Philly had 3 separate tripping penalties from the same guy. Also I think its time to separate Kuzy and Ovi again it seems every time they are on line together this season it is the least effective line for those two.
The Caps will have a couple days off before playing Philly again but this time in Washington.
