I think we’ve all been there before. Board battles are where you earn your money and earn respect from your teammates. This is an area of no holds barred, the better man comes out with the puck and the other guy is a giant pussy. As a player you look for certain areas to unleash pain on the other player just to set the tone and be able to walk out of the rink that night being able to be like “hey dad did you see me stick that guy? Are you proud of me?” Having said all that, that is exactly what happened between Nyquist and Spurgeon. Lets have a little rundown here.
First things first, Spurgeon gets Nyquist with a pretty decent cross check to the back while the scrum for the puck is going on. Spurgeon is thinking “Gotcha pal” while Nyquist begins turning into the hulk. Now I’m only guessing here but I’m assuming Spurgeon got Nyquist in an area with little to no padding. A standard cross check is “oh yeah whatever” but the reaction following the cross check makes me believe that missed everything. Also, some guys just have little things that drive them nuts. Me for example, I don’t care if you hit me, pull me down, talk a bunch of shit- that’s fine. If you slash me and its loud enough for me and everyone else in the rink to hear- I’m going to do my best to make you cry whether through physical or emotional punishment. I will either gut you like a fish or convince you that I actually boned your mom, your sister, your aunt, and just about any girl in your life who is dumb enough to think you’re worth anything. A hard slash is my tick as a hard cross check seems to be Nyquists.
Second part. Nyquist turns around and identifies his target. I think we’ve all been there. Pushed a little bit to far, in a little bit of pain and all you want is chaos. Sometimes it takes a little longer to retaliate than others. We’ve all had to remember a number or a name so we can get them back in the third but Nyquist is in great position to set the tone right then and there. He locks on to Spurgeon and to be honest Spurgeon probably should’ve know that was coming. Devils advocate- Spurgeon isn’t standing there, the chop to the face doesn’t happen. Don’t be an idiot Jared. If you set someone off make sure to get the fuck out of there or at least duck and cover.
To be honest, I think Nyquist wanted to gut Spurg but maybe not in the face. I only say that because I don’t really know Nyquist that well and I’m assuming he’s just another incredibly soft euro player. But who knows? Maybe Nyquist is a legit psychopath- one of the real quiet types who just blows up when the moment is right? I don’t think he met to stick Spurgeon in the face but he did and he’s going to get suspended at an “in-person hearing”.
Last thing I wanna say is the DOPS in the NHL is a joke and has been for quite sometime. They never make the right call. I would suspend him for 7 games but I can see the DOPS going over the top to compensate and give him 15 games or be the same old guys and give him a Brad Marchand fine. Regardless, I may be a sick fuck but hockey is way more fun to watch when this stuff is happening.
