The Chicago Blackhawks Will (Probably) Make The Playoffs

In late December I wrote into the Morning Skate Podcast and asked a question. Will the Chicago Blackhawks make the playoffs? They were the joke of the league, but got hot after a small roadie and pulled themselves into like 10 points off the wild card spot. My question was basically shunned and rightfully so (side note, I’m pretty sure Ked didn’t understand how the wild card worked…shots fired). At that point the Blackhawks were the joke of the league and were not even considered on the radar for playoff contention. But they were only 10 points out and were on the a little run, and ended up going 6-2-1 to end the year.

Now let’s fast forward to today. The Chicago Blackhawks are 6-4-3 since the start of 2019. They sit 3 points out of a playoff spot. Yep. Just 3 points out of the wild card. Kane is having another career year with 78 points and second only to Kucherov (81 points). Kane isn’t the only one that has stepped up here after a span where they won 2 of 27 games. Alex DeBrincat is the 5th player from the 2016 draft to score 100 points, behind Matthews, Laine, Tkahcuk, Keller, while third in goals behind Laine, Matthews. He has 26 goals and 48 points for an impressive season thus far. Captain Toews has stepped up too and is finally producing (23g, 30a) and leading this team back into relevancy. Despite one of the worst Novembers in team history, the Chicago Blackhawks are back and should not be ruled out as a playoff team. From looking at their schedule the rest of the way, they don’t seem to have a very tough run. They play a lot of mediocre teams from now on and only have 6 games against the elite in the NHL.

Just to make myself clear, I am not saying they will win the Stanley Cup. But I am saying that this has to be one of the best turnarounds by any team in history if they snag a playoff spot. This almost reminds me of the run the Devils made back in 2009? when they were dead last and went on an incredible streak to just miss the playoffs.

So credit to me for seeing the dim light of hope when everyone else saw darkness. I was laughed at and shunned publicly on the podcast for everyone to hear. But I took the humiliation and patiently waited for the right time to bring up the Chicago Blackhawks. Now is the right time. Because when they are sitting in the wild card spot 2 weeks from now, I want all the credit!
