Bobby Ryan has had a.. let’s say complicated journey. If you’ve read his players tribune, he didn’t have your normal every day kind of childhood. A player who is quick on his feet and can think the game at an elite level, Bobby Ryan was supposed to be Ottawas franchise kind of guy. Back in 2014, Ryan signed a seven year deal with an AAV of 7.25 million. Since this contract, Bobby hadn’t been able to particularly live up to it.
The amount of pressure athletes put on themselves is insane and as a fan I don’t think we really can comprehend that. Hockey players are warriors, often playing through numerous injuries that would side line me from my 9-5 for months. Bobby hadn’t been healthy for a bit and then in November, he took an extended leave of absence as he went to battle with alcohol. Stick taps all around. I think we can all appreciate and respect anyone who recognizes a problem and does what they need to do to get through it, and that is exactly what Bobby did.
This is the coolest story this year. Yeah, an EBUG made 8 saves and allowed 2 goals which is pretty cool but Bobby Ryan recognized a problem, Bobby Ryan did what he had to do to help solve it, and Bobby Ryan went out there and showed the world what he is capable of doing. I can’t even imagine the emotions he was going through as he scored not one, not two, but three goals. The Bobby chants gave me goosebumps, what a moment for a team that hasn’t had that many bright spots in the last few years.
Again, kudos to Mr. Ryan for being one bad ass mama jama. I thought it was really cool how he thanked his wife, how he thanks his coach for even letting him be around the boys. He recognized that he took several things for granted and made changes to make sure that doesn’t happen. This is the type of stuff you love to see.
