Well folks round robin play is over for the Caps and the boys had some ups and downs but finished strong overall with their 2-1 victory over Boston courtesy of TJ Oshie and best goal scorer in the league Big Time Tommy Wilson.
With this win it put the Caps in as the 3 seed in the Stanley Cup Playoffs, and they will face their former Coach Barry Trotz and the 6 seed New York Islanders in the first round of the playoffs.
The Islanders are coming off a 3-1 series win over the Florida Panthers where they outscored Florida 13-7 behind the excellent goaltending of former Cap Semyon Varlamov.
The Islanders and Capitals faced off against one another 4 times this season where they split the regular season game series. The most notable contest between the teams was on January 18th where the Caps were down 4-1 in the second period and completed the dramatic comeback with the help of Alex Ovechkin’s hat trick for the 6-4 victory.
Take a big deep breath Caps fans we hopefully will get back John Carlson for the Cup run, but it was a good to see the Caps run with the next man up mentality with players like Martin Fehervary making his playoff debut today.
If the Caps lost they would have had to play the red hot losers in Carolina, but instead we get the Isles which I think the Caps match-up better with right now and as Caps fans know Varly for the Isles can be streaky so getting ahead early is key!
If the Caps are going to make a serious run they are going to need more offensive production from the likes of Ovi, Kuzy, and Vrana which have been cold during these round robin games, but as we know when the playoffs really start next week the boys will be buzzing a little more so expect some big hits and big goals from the play-makers I just mentioned.
