What to do About NHL Video Review

Each week we take your Twitter questions and voicemails on our podcast. We like to keep our listeners/followers engaged because at the end of the day, we are all hockey fans and we all live to watch the game we love. This weeks hot button issue was about NHL referees and review, which makes sense after watching the St. Louis Blues lose to the Sharks in overtime on an uncalled handpass. You can hear the calls here (45:50 mark).

So the questions were asked, where do we go from here.

The NHL allowed video reviews for one thing and one thing only: to avoid controversial calls / to get the right call on the ice. In hindsight, it sounds like a great idea. Surely if you are able to rewind a play you will be able to get the correct response. What they forgot to think about is 2 things.

  1. Not everything is black and white- there is viewer discretion.
  2. Offsides and goal calls are reviewable, but they also left a majority of controversial type plays on the table. They did this so we don’t have reviews turning the game into a 6 hour snooze fest, but by doing so, a non-reviewable call could change the entire course of a game making it, and lets say this together, CONTROVERSIAL.

Video review is the NHLs biggest problem when it was created to be its solution. Plays like Landeskog being a half an inch off side in the semi finals are allowed to be reviewed but hand passes, Cody Eakin headshots and pucks in and out of play are not. How does that make any sense? It doesn’t. So in my opinion, there are 2 ways the NHL can go right now.

  1. Back to the beginning, eliminate all video review and lets get back to the roots of the sport.
  2. Review everything. You can’t claim one thing is more justified or important than another, especially after watching the playoffs this year.

I’m a traditionalist. I’d rather have nothing reviewed, keeping everything consistent. Would people bitch? Of course they would but how is that any different than now? The problem is that the NHL fan has a taste for reviewing so getting that out of their system will be damn near impossible. This is why I believe the NHL will eventually just start reviewing everything, making this game impossible to watch. Why? Because there will be hypothetically less bitching and its 2019- people love things and other people to be judged.

Regardless of what way they go, Hal came up with a great idea. Each year, a hockey fan gets 3 times in which they can have an all out hissy fit on the inter web about a poor call. Once you’ve used your allotted 3 bitchings, you won’t be allowed to cry and cry and cry some more. I love it, what do you think? What would you do if you were the NHL? Should be interesting really stupid.
